Results updated 22 Jun 2022

Consultation on the proposed enrolment scheme was open from 19 April to 1 June 2022.

The consultation requested submissions on the proposed enrolment scheme as determined by the Education and Training Act 2020 (the Act).

Four submissions were received during the consultation period. The submissions received focused on the related legislation described in the Act which is current law.

Comments made through the submission process relating to legislation in the Act, and those pertaining to access to ancestral land from mana whenua will be referred to the Ministry of Education policy team for further and wider consideration.

As there was no specific feedback received about the nature of the proposed scheme, the Ministry of Education will continue to work with the board to develop the enrolment scheme as represented in the consultation document.

The Ministry of Education is currently working with the Board of Karetu School to implement a new enrolment scheme.

Enrolment schemes are needed to help manage the risk of overcrowding at schools.  This allows Boards to manage the risk of overcrowding, provides a fair and transparent process for enrolment and ensures we are making the best use of schooling facilities across the area.

Enrolment schemes do mean that all families will have entitlement to attend a school that is reasonably convenient to them but won’t necessarily have the same entitlement to enrol at all state schools.

Note - students already enrolled at a school before a home zone is implemented or changed are entitled to stay at their current school.

It’s important that we hear and understand community perspectives before we implement amendments or new zones – especially the practical implication and whether the amended boundaries accurately reflect the area.  Please have a look at the draft map and overview information available below before you participate in the consultation process. You may also want to read the FAQs about enrolment schemes in relation to Karetu School.

This consultation process is about enrolment schemes, which determines the entitlement to enrol.  It’s important to note that a student’s eligibility to enrol may be different to their eligibility for School Transport assistance.  Further information about eligibility to school transport can be found here.

The Ministry will consider all feedback and consult with the school board before making a final decision. We expect the School community to be updated about progress made towards the end of Term 2. The new schemes and changes are expected to come into effect for the beginning of Term 3.
